North American Free Trade Agreement that was shaken upon between the US and our friends across the border several years ago now was propagandized by those against it as a move that would take away employment from U.S. citizens as more product was imported from across the border into the US … cheaper to make there than here so people would supposedly lose jobs/employment here.

While certainly there were some jobs lost…there are always jobs lost in some industry or another when less expensive imports come in, not nearly the amount of jobs were lost as were highly publicized before the trade agreement was signed.

This is a global economy and trying to save jobs here by not allowing imports into the country is a brain dead reactionary exercize that ignores the inevitability of the global economy.

I suppose you’re going to have to extrapolate why this should be important to HR professionals…I don’t know why it should be any more important to them than to anybody else in business (or the world, for that matter)..esp. since NAFTA is a done deal for several years now and I don’t think has had all that big an impact on us in the US that I hear anybody talking or crying about (bad or good.) NAFTA is very old news as far as I am concerned.

I’m not much of an expert on HR or economics, but I would imagine that the regulations regarding the hiring of foreigners, and their pay, benefits, taxes, etc are all affected and regulated by NAFTA treaty. When one considers the large number of American jobs lost over the past few years as companies move to Mexico or outsource to India or Pakistan I think that HR departments all over the country probalby pay close attention to pay and benefits in different countries in order to keep their own companies’ pay and benfits competitive. Hope this is helpful.
