Not 100% sure what you are asking here but I’ll give it a go. If I am not understanding you and answering wrong just specify and I’ll try to help you again(I do on occasion check back to questions I’ve answered.

Hurst makes Doodle a sympathetic character by making him sickly and weak. We can identify with Doodle and see him as a ill little boy that needs protecting. His brother bullies/teases him, making the reader feel even worse for Doodle.

Doodle tries hard to make his brother proud and complete the “program” his brother sets up, which the reader knows is not for Doodles benefit, but for the brothers pride. When Doodle fails(by his brothers standards) we feel the pain he must have felt for letting his brother down and even more so when Doodle dies at the end.
