The gradient is the height of the increase divided by the distance forward
If a slope is 45 degrees upwards then the gradient is equal to one If its steeper than that it is more than one
The answer to the question is relative
The gradient is one way to measure how steep the slope is
A road that has a gradient of 0.01 units is not known to be steep
That road goes up 1 unit for every 100 units distance
i.e. a gradient of 0.01 or (one in a 100)

Divide the rise (y variable) by the run (x variable). The larger the number (if positive) or smaller (if negative), the steeper the slope.
