Shakespeare’s famous Macbeth – but his life was nothing like that depicted by the Bard. Macbeth was the last Celtic king to rule Scotland and the first to adopt primogeniture (direct descent) of the crown. Until that time, the crown was normally passed to a collateral branch of the family – a cousin, or some other relative, but not a direct descendant.
Macbeth is said to have been the first Scottish king to visit Rome, which he did in 1050 and, contrary to the parsimonious reputation that Scots have, he was noted for his liberality and for flinging handsful of coins to the crowds.
