The x variable is the independent variable, which means that as it changes, the y variable (dependent variable) changes. The y variable depends on the x. So, ask yourself, “What depends on the other variable?”

Does the number of miles walked depend on the amount of money owed, or does the amount of money owed depend on the number of miles walked?

In this case, the amount of money owed depends on the number of miles walked, so the number of miles is on the x-axis.

I’d say it’s better to put volume on the y axis because you know the volume’s upper bound. The burette will not exceed 40cm. Usually you put the larger information set on the x axis for aesthetic reasons. Line graphs that show change over time are just always with time on the x axis.

the independent variable always goes on the x-axis, meaning it is not dependent on the other value ( y-axis)

so in your case miles goes on the x axis, and money made goes on the y axis.

Simply because it is mikes that determines how much money one makes

I think either way is acceptable. Just be consistent. Figure out what works best for you. Usually the x axis is related to periods of time or duration, with the y axis being more about quantities, (like $).
