Personally, I would inform the teacher that it is an emergency while I get up to go. When I come back, I would ask her politely if she wanted me to see the principle. If the answer was yes, then I would say the same thing, apologize and bring in a note the next day. Some people are unable to hold it for a long time and if they don’t go then an accident will occur which would be more embarrassing than running out the door. Should this happen frequency, then a doctor should be consulted and the person placed on those tablets which calm the bladder. Also a change of clothes would be appropriate if the person is unable to reach the bathroom in time.

I think kids should be allowed to use the restroom. They should never be denied in an emergency. It’s just basic decency, BUT they also ought to learn to plan their time a bit as they grow older. I understand why a teacher would ask students to use the bathroom at recess and lunch. If you came back from lunch and 10 minutes later had to ask for a restroom break at work, I don’t think the boss would be too amused. There are plenty of jobs where you just can’t leave your desk or station and use the restroom at will without telling anyone. Supermarket cashiers, receptionists, emergency operators (911), factory line workers (the line would shut down without a backup), hospital emergency room admitting clerks (how’d you like to walk up and find that spot unattended?) oh and the most obvious one, teachers. With morning recess yard duty, a teacher can have to wait up to 4 hours to use the restroom. What do you think the parents would think if their child’s teacher just said, “Take care of yourselves, I’m stepping out for a potty break.”? In an emergency, she calls the principal or office for relief. When I worked at a department store in fine jewelry if I had left the displays unattended I would have been fired. Sure I could go, but I had to have someone to relieve me. These are all blue collar jobs, with the exception of teachers. There’s a dirty secret, that’s the type of job schools prepare students for. Everyone will not have a job someday where they are autonomous and in charge. Should schools prepare kids for that? It’s debatable. Right now a lot of unemployed people would love to have a job like that. Every child has to use the restroom during class time sometimes and they should be allowed to go. The teacher has every right to remind Jr. to go on his way to class if he always needs to go in the 1st 15 minutes. Or if he spends 20 minutes there. If that happens and the child isn’t ill, detention is appropriate. My boss wouldn’t be amused if I took a 20 bathroom break. Teachers need to deal with those kids individually. Calling them for a discussion of the issue for a minute or two of recess would be an appropriate way. If you miss 20 minutes of class, shouldn’t you owe it back?. Unfortunately it’s usually the trouble makers whose parents insist they can do no wrong and are perfect and don’t support the teacher. They think it’s fine if the child comes in from break and 10 minutes later uses the restroom every single day; it’s not their job to remind them that they need to go on breaks. I guess I see this as common sense. Nobody should be denied a basic right. But that privilege comes with responsibility. Don’t misuse it and you won’t have a problem. Little kids can’t take on as much responsibility as a high school student and teachers should act accordingly.
