Mathematics – HELP!?

Show that 3x + 4y + 10 = 0 is a tangent to the circle (x-2)^2 + (y+3)^2 = 16/25

Please, I need help and an explanation so I can learn… Thanks

This is equation of a circle:

(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2

From this equation we can get the followings :

The center of the circle is : c ( 2 , -3 )

The radius of the circle is : r = 4/5

You need to show that the distance from the center of the circle to that line is equal to the raduis of the circle.

The formula is :

p(m,n) , d = Ax + By + C

d = Am + Bn + C / rad(A2+B2)

(rad = squar root)

Using this formula and the information we get :

d =( 3*2 + 4* -3 + 10 ) / rad (9 + 16)

d = ( 6 – 12 + 10 ) / rad 25

d = 4/5

we can see that the distance from the line to the center of the circle is equal to the radius ,

d = r

So the line is tangent to the circle.
