An icicle is melting at the rate of three fourths of its weight every hour. After three hours, it wieghs five-eighths of a pound. How much did it weigh in the beginning?

If three-fourths melts, only 1/4 is left. So five-eighths is one-fourth of 5/2 meaning 5/2 pounds was there with one hour to go, which is 1/4 of 10 meaning 10 lb was there with 2 hours to go, which is 1/4 of 40 lb. So three hours ago it weighed 40 lb.
