Math Word Problem Help Please?

If the sides of a square are lengthened by 8cm, the area becomes 144 cm^2. Find the length of a side of the original square

The sides now are 12 cm because 12 x 12 is 144, but that is after they were lengthened 8 cm. The original square was 4 by 4.

It’s a square, so if you take the square root of the area to get the length of each side with the additional 8cm added. Then just subtract the 8cm from the result of the square root to get the answer.

If you don’t know what a square root is, look for a number that is equal to 144 when it is mulitplied by itself.
