We dropped the bomb on those cities because the other option on the list was a full invasion of which we figured the human lost was going to be ten times greater then dropping the bomb. It was true we would have lost more people invading Japan then we did the whole war until then. The Japanese were dug in and they were not going to give in easy. They thought their emperor was a God and they worshipped him as one. One of the tenents of surrender was for the emperor to proclaim he was not a God. this helped to stop this myth.
Anyways, read a bit of history on it and you will be able to get better detail then I have given here in a short stint.
