This is a basic number theory question. The answer is 4 x 3 x 2 x1 or 24. If Wilbur had 5 trophies it would be 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 or 120. Draw a diagram if you need help envisioning this ok.

_ _ _ _ (4 places for his trophies)

F _ _ _ (3 places left)

F S _ _ (2 places left)

F S B _ (1 place left)

This is why you multiply.

We can actually use the multiple law of probability here:

The first trophy can be any of the 4.

The second trophy can be only 3 of the 4.

The third can be 2 of the 4.

The final one can only be one choice.

Multiplying these independent events together, we get :

4*3*2*1 = 24 Combinations

An alternative way to do it would be to draw a tree diagram, which is much more tedious of course.

24 different possibilities. 6 for each type of trophy going first.

For example:

Football, Soccer, Bowling, Tennis

Football, Soccer, Tennis. Bowling

Football, Bowling, Tennis Soccer

Football, Bowling, Soccer, Tennis

Football, Tennis, Soccer, Bowling,

Football. Tennis, Bowling, Soccer

then do this for every one.

Hope I could help!!

He has 4 choices for what goes first, 3 choices then for second, 2 for third, and that will leave him only one possibility for fourth. So,

4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 4! = 24 possible arrangements

it truly is a quadratic equation solved by ability of the final formula [-b +- ?(b^2 – 4ac)]/2a putting interior the numbers a = 4 , b = 4 , c = 7 we get ==> [-4 +- ?( sixteen – (sixteen*-7)]/8 = [-4 +- ?( sixteen + 112)]/8 = [-4 +- ?( 128 )]/8 = [-4 +- ?( 2 * sixty 4)]/8 = -4/8 +- 8/8?2 so p = -4/8 = -a million/2 & q = a million answer -a million/2 +- ?2

You do 4! or 4X3X2X1

and get 24 different arrangements.
