Music during Homework?

Are there any REAL (by this, I mean from a reliable source) online articles in favor of doing homework while listening to music? I am having a big fight with my mom about this. I want to listen to iTunes, she won’t even let me have the radio in the background. Please help me.

I don’t know of any articles, but it really depends on how your brain works. Some people function better having background noise while others need it to be quiet. I took a learning profile through my work called the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument, and found that my predominant brain traits really do work and learn better in a scattered environment instead of a quiet one..which made sense to me because I always used to study with soft music or the tv on (usually on something i didn’t actually care about watching, but just needed the background noise). And I had straight A’s through school! 🙂

Ur Question
A study at stockholm university was able to prove that noise such as music could help kids succeed who had a cognitive delay or ADHD. There have also been studys into this being a stimuli for your every day person depending on the way the brain function (i can’t cite any because i only know this from former physycology based classses) It has been studied that certain people can concentrate better when there is some type of backround noise. Turning up your music to loud would negate this effect but leaving it on quietly (you have to have it loud enough to hear it at least) might actually help you.

Actually, doing study for tests with music is not helpful. Attempt to create an environment similar to the test environment whenever possible–straight seating, no music, etc. This will allow your mind to fall into the right state when you go to take your test and will aid your recall.

If you study with music you actually do hurt your ability to recall in a non music environment.

That being said, general homework that is just repetative practice, such as math exercises, can be done with music that has NO WORDS. If the music has words you will find yourself multi tasking–having to rapidly switch focus from your task of homework to hearing lyrics and back–and this will actually make it take LONGER to finish your homework and will make it much more difficult to commit information to memory.

Non vocal Jazz and Classical or Piano are OK homework music. No music is best when committing information to memory.

Best of luck–articles links below!

No i cant listen to music while i do jomework. It really distracts me. Especially when its caychy or i know it, i wanna sing alonh in my head. But when its extremely quiet, i get distracted too because i focus on trying not to breathe too loud, cough, sneeze, or amything else that would break the silence. I like to work in a well lit room, at a table, with maybe a fan running

What do you mean by “real”? Real is what you make it. Real is a physical manifestation of what you are brought up to believe is real. Please make your question more specific.
