Okay – when you deal with negative numbers you have to think of them as being on one side of a dividing line, with positive numbers on the other side.

If you have -2 on the negative side of the line, and you need an amount that is 5 greater, subtract the -2 from +5 and you get three. You can figure out the next one using the same process.

When it comes to subtraction, you want to go farther down the negative line to find our a number that is less. So if you begin with -2 and need to find a number 5 units smaller than that, you add the 5 to the 2 and get -7. Can you see how that works?

Use the same logic for your last question about the number that is three less than zero. If it helps you, draw a line with 0 in the middle and add the negative numbers or positive numbers in the appropriate places, then count spaces.

-2+5

-3+6

-2-5

0-3

When the signs are different just treat it like a subtraction

5-2 = 3

6-3 = 3

0-3 = -3

When the signs are the same just add and use the same sign

-2-5 = -7

For your first question, the answer’s “3”. The question can be converted into an equation “-2+5=?” or the other way around, “5-2=?”.

Second answer is “3”, based on the equation “-3+6=?” or “6-3=?”.

Third answer is “3”.

Fourth answer is “-3”.
