One integer is 2 more than 5 times another integer. If the difference of the two integer is 26, what is the smaller integer

Here are your 2 equations:

First, for y is 2 more than 5 times x:

5x + 2 = y

Next, the difference between the 2 numbers is 26.

y – x = 26

Notice I put y first, because I know it’s definitely bigger than x, from the 1st equation.

Now, plug in the value for y from the 1st equation into the 2nd equation, and work it out:

5x +2 – x = 26

4x + 2 = 26

4x = 24

x = 6

(In this case, y would be 6*5 +2, or 32.)
