Why did people do drugs around the 70s and 80s, and why do we (in 2007) do them now?

Many people in the 70’s and 80’s did drugs because they were fashionable. For exmaple, the big discos (like Studio 54 in New York) attracted people who wanted to dance and snort coke.
Many people today do drugs becuase they’re unhappy and they think the drugs will help. They are also doing more prescription drugs (painkillers and sleep aids) and fewer “street” drugs like cocaine, although there are still plenty of street drugs around.
