You can see that x and y have a linear relationship.

For each ‘1’ that x changes, y changes by ‘2’ in the other direction.

This means that the points represent a straight line, and the general equation for that is:

y = mx + b

where ‘m’ is the slope and ‘b’ is the y-intercept.

We have already worked out that the slope is -2. But you can check it from any two points by using the standard (delta y)/(delta x) formula.

So far we have:

y = -2x + b

Substitute in an point given above, such as (1,1) :

1 = -2 + b

b = 3

Therefore the equation is y = -2x + 3

1. When x = 15, y = -2(15) + 3 = -27

2. When y = -39, -39 = -2x + 3

-42 = -2x

x = 21
