Denote the number of republicans by r. Then the number of democrats is r + 12. The total number of senate members is 100, hence

r + r + 12 = 100

Subtracting 12 from both sides, we get

2r = 88

Dividing both sides by 2, we find

r = 44.

Okay. You start with 100. One group has 12 more than the other. So subtract 12 from 100. That leaves you with 88. If you divide 88 in half, you get 44.

So, the republicans have 44.

Then add the 12 back to the remaining 44, for a total of 56 democrats.

Hope this helps.

Well you should represent the equation using a letter, you have to solve for republicans so we will say r. r=republicans and r+12=democrats. So your equation is r+r+12=100 or 2r+12=100. Then solve for r, good luck!

There are 100 people. There are two types of them, but there are 12 more of one than the other. Republicans(x) + Democrats(x) +12 more Democrats = 100 members.

x+12=democrats

x=republicans

x+(x+12)=100

x+x+12=100

2x+12=100

2x=100-12

2x=88

x=44

44 republicans
