is this fraction simplified?

x / (x – .5)

I’ve been looking at it thinking to myself that it’s already simplified but I’m not 100% sure and it’s driving me crazy. It’s been a while since I’ve done complex fractions. 😛

Yes and No. Nothing cancels out, so you could say that it is simplified. Generally, though, you don’t have decimals in a fraction. This makes it more difficult to simplify. Change the .5 to 1/2. Now, because you have a denominator of 2 in the BIG denominator, you need to get rid of it by multiplying the top and bottom of the BIG fraction by 2. (Both by 2!) Top: 2x, Bottom: 2x-1. So,your fraction is 2x/(2x-1), and now it’s simplified.

Be careful, because a lot of people think that they can cancel the 2 out of this, but because of that 1 on the bottom, you CANNOT!!!
