ROCKMUM LOVES BOWIE

is this a BRILLIANT idea for my daughters VOLCANO project?

my daughter is in grade 5, doing a project on volcanos

now all the other kids are making a volcano sculpture out of clay , or paper mache ect

but we thought up an edible volcano , made of 3 chocolate mudcakes in a pile, carved with a tunnel, my daughter will pour orange jelly over the top in the classroom

then all the kids will eat it

will her teacher b impressed or,, will she think its stupid?

Great idea rockmum! But will the kids be able to resist a dip everytime they pass an edible volcano??guess she can put up a small board saying”pls return back for a piece of it”.maybe the teacher will take a dig too!!hahaha. You wont believe it that my daughter too has a science exhibition tomorrow.I did not send her to school today as she was with a cold (the paranoid mum,u see!).I will tell her about the chocolate volcano…she will love it!!!

I did this option as a child and got distinctions. every child I have subsequently helped do the same thing has also wowed all their class and got excellent marks. You need. An ordinary sized jam jar a piece of board to sit the jam jar on. Old newspapers Some wallpaper paste or PVA glue (wood glue) Some paint Red food colouring or red poweder paint Bicarbonate of soda Vinegar. – Sit the jam jar on the board and fix the jar by papier macheing the jar and the board, so that you are building up a volcano shaped form. – (see instructions for good basic papier mache below) – When the structure is built..ie, it is a volcano shape, with the opening of the jam jar revealed, – paint the structure in volcano type colours. – It should take no more than a day to totally dry (best to keep near to a radiator or in an airing cupboard.) – depending on the size of the jar, place about 4-5 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into the opening of the volcano, and add a little red food colouring, or red poweder paint. – Gradually add little drips of vinegar to the bicarbonate.. (depending on the size of the jar you will need to add more bicarbonate and more vinegar for the best effect. ) – and the volcanoe, erupts… – To repeat the experiment, be sure to clean the jamjar first, then add more bicarbonate and more vinegar. Your daughter should really enjoy building the model PAPIER MACHE Easy way: – rip up an old newspaper into small pieces and soak in a basin of warm water.. add a quantity of wallpaper paste to this, so that the water becomes gelatinous.. put in food processor so that it becomes a mush..(the hot water helps soften the paper.) – Add a little PVA or wood glue to make it all stick together better.. This forms a paste that can be moulded on, a bit like a cement.. (the food processor will come up perfect with warm water and wshing up liquid) Slower way: strips of newspaper, that are wetted with wallpaper paste mixed with a little PVA.. apply the newspaper in strips, wetting both sides with the glue mixture.

It is creative, but not very practical. I cannot imagine a teacher being thrilled at the thought of 20-25 11 year olds on a sugar rush while she is trying to teach.

What did your daughter learn about volcanos in the process of making her mudcakes?

I think that’s a excellent idea!!! But I still think you should take note of what type of person, your daughter’s teacher is like… But I was wondering if you could sort of blow it up, to show what a volcano does….

And maybe you could make another replicate, just in case this is to be shown to other people… And maybe not too much chocolate and sticky stuff, cos most school have carpet.

Apary from the obvious health risks associated with your daughter making a 3 tonne chocolate cake, also the obesity epidemic running out of control, the problem i would have as a teacher is is it her work or yours, you say we though, no if she said she thought of it no dramas, let her decide rather than you, personally i wouldnt eat the cake or let others in case of someone dying

I reckon it’s a really good idea, but you have get permission first from the teacher cause these days you have to be careful with allergies.

At my kids school there is no party cakes and party foods and even lollie bags allowed.

It is cute but you should have her ask her teacher if it is OK before you make it and bring it in. The teacher might not want to kids eating sweets in class or something like that.

Why not make your volcano out of felt? It could be more colorful than the others. Or use fun foam.
