It not easy, but well worth learning: completing the square

Follow these steps:

y= x^2 + 6x + 4, take 1/2 of the 6 and square it, you get 9

y = x^2 + 6x + 9 -9 +4

now we have a perfect square as x^2 + 6x + 9 = (x+3)^2

y = (x+3)^2 -5 You can now add 5 to both sides to get the form you’re seeking:

y + 5 = (x + 3)^2 That’s it!
