♥ peace out ♥

Is Studying/Doing homework with music on really less effective?

Does it matter what kind of music your’e listening to? Could you be listenting to say… bach, instead of say… yellowcard, and have it actually help you? Is it worse if you have headphones, or have it playing in the background? I hear alot of different theories about it… wondering which one is actually true. lol.

Its thought that listening to music isn’t a great idea whilst studying if the content is going to be in an exam.

The way you memory works is that you take in a lot more going on around you than you think when your studying. If your exam is going to be in silence then you should revise/study in silence, it gives you better and faster recall in the exam. I tried this out at uni and I can honestly say it worked!

Each person is different.

But consider that if you’re listening and tapping your foot or singing along that your attention is divided from your work and the music. A second point is you should study how you’re going to take the test.

I used to study to music and then gave up on it when I was focusing on assignments that required a lot of thought for shorter (2 hours or so) periods of time. For writing papers or running FEA analysis (there’s a lot of ‘hurry up and wait’ time there) I’d listen to music.

Music without words (classical and jazz) might be better than rock, but there is no right answer. If you’re doing well in school, might as well keep doing what you’re doing.

Good question! I’m curious too. I always do my homework with music on in the background – usually quiet but with words, not classical. I suspect it’s better to have it playing in the room not directly into your ears and probably soothing classical is better…I mean wouldn’t it have to be?? I hold to the theory that music without words probably helps while studying and music with words probably hinders. So…I guess for everyone it’s different though. We’ll never know…

It really depends on the person.

For me, I have a hard time concentrating in complete silence so whenever I study there is music playing. It is ‘mellow’ music usually but I don’t go as far as listening to Bach or classical music.

good question. sometimes it hinders me, but i find that sometimes i’ll be so into my work that it doesn’t matter what music i’m listening to. but i’ve heard that listening to mozart helps in remembering stuff. i’ve never tried it though. hope this helps.

for me, music helps me remember things… it a sub-conscious reaction…

as for headphones vs. BG?

headphones tend to distract from the learning, rather than help it. (Although iPod earphones are better-suited than headphones…)

hope it helps! 😀
