The only thing in which they affect it’s that they make a person fall behind the regular academic program….since they can’t take the normal classes until they pass those remedial classes.

A lot of it depends on how the class is presented…if a student knows they are in “bonehead math” or something like that, obviously they wouldn’t be very motivated to get ahead.
But, if a class is presented and taught in a way that truly teaches the concepts and allows the students to move on into whatever level they can, then I believe it can be very helpful.
Because of the stigma of remedial classes, and because of the range of concepts that may need to be remediated, I have found that one on one or small group tutoring is often a better choice.
