Jem (plus Scout scuttling along with him) had to read to Mrs. Dubose for two hours every day for an entire month, as a punishment for ruining her white camillias. She gradually increases the time every day–they don’t understand the reason for her asking this until after she dies, when Atticus tells them that she needed a distraction from her pain as to stop abusing Morphine and dying free of it. She was a symbol of courage in the novel.
