In the 1700s what supplies did they have when they chopped wood w/ axes?

I’m suppost to make a comic for a social studies project. We r in groups, and my job is to make a comic about how life during the Rev. war was hard for the people at home 2. So Im making a comic about how it was hard on the women, because so many men were gone and they had to take over the mens jobs. And I wanted to draw a women attempting to pick up an axe that is 2 big and heavy for her. Thats why I wanted to kno:
