i think i no the answer but i cant explain it. help?

i need help with this question, it says

To use a double-pan balance, you put the objects to be weighed on one side and then put known weights on the other side until the pans balance.

1. Explain why it is useful to have the balance point halfway between the two pans.

If the fulcrum is in the middle then the weights on each side must be exactly equal to balance. Otherwies the weight times the distance w x d = w x d to the fulcrum would have to be exactly the same to balance. If the distance is the same, its easier to evaluate the weights
