A THESIS STATEMENT:

tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion, in one complete sentence.

This sentence, your thesis statement, is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper. A Thesis Statement directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel that others might dispute. It is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

YOUR ONE Sentence THESIS STATEMENT GOES IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH, then

TOPIC SENTENCES begin new paragraphs.

Every paragraph needs a topic sentence. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. It gives the reader an idea of what the paragraph is going to be about.

The supporting sentences need to be about the idea presented in the topic sentence. In a paragraph, every sentence should “belong”.

EXPLANATION

Quality of being able to think clearly, sensibly, and logically. Your paper must make sense, and must flow in a logical order.

ILLUSTRATION.

Giving examples in your paper and explaining them.

EXAMPLES.

The girl was sad. An example would be: The girl was sad. I could see tears flowing from her eyes as they began to swell. She began to sob. I knew that her mother’s death was killing her inside.

I hope this helps you. Good Luck, and vote!
