I Need help with my college algebra math word problem!?

A chemist has a 35% saline solution and a 60% saline solution available. How many milliliters of each of these available solutions should she mix to obtain 700 mL of a 40% solution?

First, get your equation: basically its .35 of x plus .6 of y equals .4 of 700, or 280. that gets us to:

.35x + .6y=280

x + y= 700, which we know from the text.

that we can alter to get:

x= 700-y

.35(700-y) + .6y = 280

245 + .25y = 280

.25y = 35

y=140

reverting to our original equation:

x+ 140 = 700

x= 560
