The votes on a new slogan for the state’s welcome signs are rolling in. More than 21,000 votes have been cast online and thousands more have been called since polling began on Wdednesday, Gov. Joe Manchin’s spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg said Friday. Once the polling ends Sept. 19, the choices will be narrowed and the public will select a winner, if voters overwhelming endorse the idea of having a new slogan. Ramsburg said the governor hopes to have a decision by Thanksgiving in plenty of time to present it to legislators for possible action during the regular 2008 session. Manchin’s office announced Wednesday that the online poll would be conducted to allow West Virginia residents to come up with a new phrase for the 107 welcome signs posted on roads leading into the state. The governor has been criticized over the “Open For Business” slogan since he first proposed putting it on the road signs.
