Your theme is definitely a good one. 😉

Maybe you could start by looking up and quoting the original Langston Hughes poem for A Raisin in the Sun.

Before you write your essay, I would make a list of the characters and what their dreams are. Then figure out how the dreams were deferred and why. Was there anyone that got what they wanted? Did anyone lose hope in their dream after a while?

After you make this list, you will be able to see things in common with all of the characters. You will be able to use this in your introduction. For example, maybe they all lost hope after a while (I don’t know if this is true, I just made it up).

Also consider your own personal experience with dreams that you have had ‘deferred’ (that you’ve lost or someone ruined or delayed). Relate your experiences to the characters experiences (briefly, don’t tell your whole life story) in the introduction.

If I were writing this interesting essay on “Raisin in the Sun,” my introduction would be this:

Sir William Arthur Ward, author of “Fountains of Faith” and one of America’s most quoted writers of inspirational maxims, once said, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” In other words, if you yearn for something precious like a dream in this case, then it’s not impossible to turn that dream into reality. For “Raisin in the Sun,” the theme I most likely chose is “The Value and Purpose of Dreams” because (1st reason/body), (2nd reason/body), and (3rd reason/body).

How does a raisin become a raisin? It starts as a grape on the vine. It could have many other things: wine, jelly, or juice. But it stayed on the vine. Slowly the sun transformed the luscious grape into a shell of its former self. However, it is not dead but changed into something quite different yet it is still a grape.

There are many avenues and metaphors you can take from this.

Good luck!
