I am doing an assignment for ethics and need a clear picture of what values are can anyone help?

i know values are defined as attitudes or principles that people attain to. I do not have a problem with the definition but am trying to work out how i define what my values are. For example if i was to say i was describe myself as being compassionate, loyal, good sense of humour, family orientated are these attributes also values? Being sport orientated, is this a value? Is having a sense of humour a value? I am a little confused can anyone help? Examples would be great. I am not interested from a religious perspective only opionions/answers from a moral/ethical perspective. thanks

I also think that, besides moral issues, simply “what you value” is also part of values. For example, I come from a family where education is strongly valued, so we believe in reading lots of books, taking care of them, discussing issues at the dinner table etc. Acceptible jobs for my family would be being an Academic, a Writer or a Teacher. Somebody else may come from a family where job security and financial security are valued above education, so an acceptible career path would be an apprenticeship at 16, and working in the building industry etc.

So what you value in life is also a part of your “values” as a whole, as is what you consider to be the “right” way to lead your life. For example, career orientated, family orientated, both?

I think values can only be applied to moral issues. If you were to ask yourself any moral question, the answer you give to that question, I would consider a value. I don’t consider being sport oriented a value, but if that gives you a sense of fair play and a hard work ethic, I consider those values.
