How are Shakespeare’s plays relevant to today? Macbeth, in particular?

“”Shakespeare’s plays are still popular and retain their value for modern audiences. The ideas and themes are still so valid in the modern world.””

What examples can I use to suggest this statement is valid? How can they be persuasive? I need to use examples from Macbeth in particular… any other specific examples from other plays would be nice.

The themes of Macbeth are greed and betrayal set against a background of politics, which will never fail to be relevant! You might want to do a comparision between Lady Macbeth and Hilary Clinton (during her husband’s administration)!

And just FYI it’s only bad luck to say the name of this play while *inside a theatre*.

It depends on what aspect of the Scottish play you wish to use as an allegory for modern life. Certainly the concept of power usurping – brothers, cousins and disenchanted military staff – is as real today as was back then. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown! In countries where political instability is prevalent then the killing of a leader to attain power by anyone close to the king/president/ruler is not out the question. Military coups are a way of life in some countries and African states for example.

Romeo and Juliet. The doomed lover is a recurring theme brought vividly to life in West Side Story. Two people from opposing families (or religions, beliefs, cultures) fall in love.

This happened in occupied France where French women fell for German soldiers, in Belfast where Protestant and Catholic couples fell in love, Muslim and Christians, Jews and Arabs. The story is going to happen all the while such conflicts exist. Good luck.
