There are many different kinds of erosion such as beach erosion which is a serious problem that impacts many beaches today on Prince Edward Island. Waves that are constantly hitting the land are carrying the sand away with them out to sea. Shores are decreasing in size over years, and have caused many problems with shore side building and plant and animal life. Many efforts with plants have been made to stop erosion but they are very expensive, and are not always successful.

Where I live in Canada, the long term effect of beach erosion is that it is tearing down over time a large 200 foot bluff above the beach. The house that were built above the Scarborough Bluffs on Lake Ontario have over time toppled down the hillside or are in danger of doing so. The Bluffs were created 12,000 years ago when Lake Iroquois was in in the Ice Age and when it receded it left a 200 foot cliff and what is now Lake Ontario, one of 6 Great Lakes. The erosion caused by the constant pounding of the waves eats away at the underpinnings of the cliff and eventually it collapses, causing a silt buildup in the lake. The solution would be to put large concrete barriers at the base of the cliffs or old ships could be sunk to provide a barrier to the cliffs. For homeowners this is a devastating problem, as you bought the houses in good faith and then you watch nature take away your land and sometimes not slowly. Hurricanes and bad storms of course eat away at teh soil at an advanced rate. I hope this helps you in answering the question.
