to get 7/8 into a fraction with a denominator of 24, we multiply by 3/3, so 7/8 becomes 21/24
to get 2/3 into a fraction with a denominator of 24, we multiply by 8/8, so 2/3 becomes 16/24
to get 5/6 into a fraction with a denominator of 24, we multiply by 4/4, so 5/6 becomes 20/24
so, 21/24 +16/24 + 20/24 = 57/24, which reduces to 19/8
or, as a mixed fraction, 2 and 3/8
hope that helps
. To add fractions you must chane the fractions until all of the bottom numbers (denominators) are the same.
Why ?. Because if you had 1/2 of a hamburger and 1/3 of a hamburger, you couldn’t put them together and say you had any thing but 1/2 of a burger an 1/3 of a burger.
The bottom numbers all have to be the same. Why? Because it is called the DEMONINATOR ( or NAMER of the number),
It tells you what kind of a nunber it is. ( like red apple…red tells you what kind of an apple it is. Now you can’t add red apples and green apples say you have a total of red apples, or of green apples, cause you still have both red and green. But if you could magically change all of them into yellow apples, you could add them up as so many yellow apples.!…Right?
Are you still awake?
You have to do the same thing to fractions…make them all the same… but you use arithmetic instead of magic.
LIKE> if you took 1/12 of a burger add more 1/12 until you had 6 of the 1/12, you would have 1/2 of a burger.
1/12 +1/12 = 2/12, 2/12 + 1/12 = 3/12s on up to 6/12..
To change a large fraction to a smaller one that is equal to it, DIVIDE both the top number and the bottom number by the largest single number that will go EQUALLY into both.
Like 5 won’t go into either one equally; 3 will go into both but it is not the largest number.
6 goes in equally, and is the largest number that will. So…
6 into 6/12 … 6 goes int o6 1 time …6 goes into 12 2 times. so we have 6/12, changed by dividing 6 into top and bottom = 1/2.
whew.. so 1/2 = 6/12. ok?
we can also change a small fraction into a larger one by MULTIPLYING by the same number .
take the 1/3 of a burger. if we multiply 1 by 4, and 3 by 4 we get 4/12. so that means 1/3 = 4/12.
The whole point of ALL this is to get the bottom number of both 1/2 and 1/3 equall to the same number.
NOW…. we have 1/2 = 6/12, and 1/3 = 4/12 so we add 6/12 and 4/12, and we get 10/12.
1/2 half burger + 1/3 burger = 10/12 of a burger.
SO if we take 7/8 and 2/3 and 5/6, and try to find a number that ALL of the bottom numbers will divide into evenly, we find the number 24.
8 goes into 24 3 times, so 3 x 7 = 21/24.. 3 goes into 24 8 times, and 2 x 7 = 21, so 2/3 = 16/24.
Look at those two examples, see if you can see that 5/6 would be 20/24.
So now all the bottoms are the same…24. Add’em up..
57/24.
Now use the big to little rule, and 57/24 = 19/8 (top and bottom divided by the same nujmber, 3.)
Your teacher probably want’s that changed to 23/8.
Ask him/her why, and how.
I’m WAY tired of writting, and you probably gave up reading long ago.
Hope it helps.

21/24 + 16/24 + 20/24 = 57/24 or 2 and 9/24
7/8=21/24
2/3=16/24
5/6=20/24
21/24+16/24+20/24=57/24 Change to a mixed fraction.
common denominator is 24; so it becomes
21/24 + 16/24 + 20/24
57/24
2 and 9/24
2 and 3/8
8*3*6=144
Next, multiply each numerator (top number) by all the denominators EXCEPT its own
7*2*6=84/144
2*8*6=96/144
5*8*3=120/144
Now add them (the numerators only)together
84/144 + 96/144 + 120/144 = ?
