History Help?

On what basis did some Americans claim that Catholics were un-American?

What were ward politics?

Thank You

I can answer your first question. Americans believed that Catholics owed their first allegiance (or loyalty) to the Pope in Rome and not to the Government of the United States. There was a movement at one point called “ultramontanism”. In other words, Rome exercised its control over Catholics around the world “beyond the mountains” (the seven hills of Rome). President John F. Kennedy became America’s first Catholic president and debunked this myth of divided loyalties (that is, proved it wrong).

Houston is still divided into wards. Check out ward history there from 1866-1900. See ya!
