Help with Math Problem?

Eighty-five percent of the members of a student organization registered to attend a certain field trip. If 16 of the members who registered were unable to attend, resulting in only 65 percent of the members making the trip, how many members are in the organization?

If you know the answer, please also provide a brief explanation on how you got it! Thanks, I appreciate it. =]

The 16 people must have been 20% of the group(85 – 65 = 20)

So 16/x = 20/100; 20x = 1600; x = 80

80 members. I did it a slightly different way. . on some percentage problems you can cheat. . so I did (not cheat exactly, but do it a shortcut way. .

I did it the same way as the guy above, seeing that the 16 members consituted the 20% difference in the number of members. .

so if 16 is 20%, then half of that (8 people) is 10%, so to get the 100% number, just multiply the 10% (8 people) by 10, or 80.

Well, lets make it simple, 16 students make up 20% of the organization. So, all you have to do is multiply 16 times 5 which will give you the total amount of members, which is 80.

85-65=20 thus, 16 people is 20% so to have a 100% value make a ratio…. 16/20=x/100 (x= number of members in the org in as sense of a 100% number)… cross multiply… 16(100)=x(20)… which is equal to 1600=x(20)… divide both sides by 20 so you can leave x alone in one side… 1600/20=x… thus the 100% or total number of members in the org is 80

ok 85% of the members registered

65% showed up

16 members that were registered did not show up

so 85% – 65% = the members that did not show up which is 16

so 20% of the members that did not show up = 16

the total number of members = 16/20%

or 16/.2 = 80 members total

16 members did not attend. 65% did. so, 16 members equals 35% of those signed up to attend. so…..16 divided by .35 = 46.

Now that we know that there were 46 that signed up to attend……those 46 equal 85% of the total members. so……..46 divided by .85 = 54

answer: 54 total members.

proof: working it backwards…… it there are 54 total members…..85% of 54 is 46…….46 members signed up but only 65% attended……65% of 46 is 30. that leaves 16 that did not attend. 46-30=16.

16 people is 35% of the total 85%, so 54 people should be the relative answer.

equasion: (16/35%)/85%

I read the answer wrong… Sorry… >.< I missed the word resulting.

.85x – 16 = .65x

.85x – .65x = 16

x (.85 – .65) = 16

x (.2) = 16

x = 16/.2 = 80
