Help on a “ladder of exploitation” from “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair?

Please help. we have to do this “ladder of exploitation” about how different classes exploit the classes below them. On the bottom rung is packingtown hogs and then you have to name at least four more classes above it.

Thanks

hogs

newly arrived immigrants (Lithuanians)

more established immigrants (Irish)

poor or lower class Americans

rich or upper class Americans

Have you ever heard the expression “sh*t rolls downhill”?

How quickly the more established immigrants forgot what it was like to be newly arrived in America and taken advantage of. Connor is an example of this. He’s the boss who ruins things for Jurgis’ family.

Also think about how the real estate business takes advantage of the immigrants.

Remember the quote, “But I’m glad I’m not a hog!”?

In a way, Jurgis (and the other immigrants) are used just like the hog is.

Of course, the very richest are only able to get rich at the expense of those below them. Remember the scene where Jurgis goes home with Freddy, whose Daddy happens to own the meat packing plant? It is obscenely ornate.

The classes above the hogs, in my opinion are: 1. The hog farmers that exploit the hogs 2. The hog purchasers who exploit the farmers 3. The floor-level management of the slaughter houses who exploit the purchasers’ purchases 4. The owners of the slaughterhouses who exploit the managers, the average workers, and the consumers

There are many other ways to make your ladder, but this is a good one. You may also wish to add the workers and consumers who are almost as badly exploited as the animals themselves…

I think other immigrants prey on the packingtown hogs by selling them low quality goods and overcharging for the wedding ceremony. There are the corrupt people who demand kickbacks for finding jobs. The policians prey upon the downtrodden by offering them a small amount of money and food for votes then accept bribes from the meatpackers to sell substandard goods and mercillesly abuse the workers. The meatpackers are either above the policians because they wield the true power or under them because they pay kickbacks up the ladder.
