Try figuring out how much a gallon of water weighs.

The English system is preferable because Americans are too lazy to convert to the metric system. If not for Liberia, the USA would stand alone as the only nation using the English system.

The English system is preferable because when you make a mistake in converting from one measurement to another, the error is pretty obvious as it is not just a case of misplacing a decimal point. 12 inches is NOT 1.2 feet nor is it 0.12 yards.

I guess in America, it is still used because of all the items done in the english system.
