Fractions…?
A cabinet has shelves that are 12 1/2in. apart. On one shelf, Katherine stacked a CD player that is 4 5/8 in. high on top of an amplifier that is 6 3/4 in. high. HOw much was left above the CD player?
Favorite Answer
4 5/8 + 6 3/4=X
4 5/8 + 6 6/8=X
10 11/8 =X
X= 11 3/8
Next subtract this height from the shelf height:
12 1/2 – 11 3/8 = X
12 4/8 – 11 3/8 = X
Your answer:
X= 1 1/8″
you have 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4. all of those numbers can be changed to “8”
so 1/2*4/4 is 1*4/2*4 = 4/8. the cabinets are also 12 4/8″ tall
then 5/8 is fine the way it is, so the CD’s remain 4 5/8″ high
then 3/4 is multiplied by 2/2, so 3*2/4*2 = 6/8, so the amp is 6 6/8″ high
then you add the amp and the CD height:
=6 6/8 + 4 5/8
=10 11/8
obviously you can get another whole number out of 11/8, so 11/8 = 1 3/8 (8+3=11)
so your total height for those two objects is 11 3/8 (10 + 1 3/8)
then you subtract that total from the hight of the shelves;
12 4/8 – 11 3/8 = 1 1/8
so you have 1 1/8″ left above the CD player.
4 5/8 + 6 6/8
10 11/8 (reduces to 11 3/8)
12 1/2 – 11 3/8
12 4/8 – 11 3/8
your answer is 1 1/8 inches
12 1/2 – (4 5/8 + 6 3/4) = 12 4/8 – (4 5/8 + 6 6/8)
12 4/8 – 11 3/8 = 1 1/8
first, your fractions need to be the same denominator. in this case it will have to be in 8’s.
3/4 = 6/8
now add 4 5/8 and 6 6/8 = ?( hint 5/8 + 6/8 = 1 3/8)
now subtract your total inches from the total space – 12 1/2
If you cannot get it from there and no one else gives you the answer, email me.
+ 4 5/8
———————–
10 11/8= 11 3/8 (that’s because 8/8=1)
12 1/2 = 12 4/8
– 11 3/8
