Just ask yourself – why would the character do this? What would be the reason for him/her to act that way?

(It’s the same thing that detectives do – they try to establish a motive – a reason why – in order to identify suspects.

You need to read the entire script so that you can identify:

What does that character want? the answer to that question establishes motive whether it’s a major or a minor character.

The next question is: What does the character DO to get what is wanted?

The motive provides the REASON for something the character feels, and subsequently what they say or do, or how they relate to other characters.

Sometimes it is apparent in the story (or script) and sometimes you just need to make one up.
