During Bacon’s Rebellion, who would the plantation/slave owners side with?
I originally thought that the plantation owners would have sided with Bacon solely for the reason that they wouldn’t be interested in making peace with the Natives. If you were to own a tobacco plantation on the Chesapeake Bay, you want to keep your land, and drive out the Natives that might inhabit it. Their only good purpose to plantation owners was if they served as slaves.
Although, it was suggested that they would have sided with Berkley for the reason that they wouldn’t really care about the Natives. They just do their thing, make their money and everyone’s happy. There was something about Bacon and tobacco prices which would conflict the owners.
What do you think? Thanks.

the “Indian problem” needed to be solved. protective forts were not working to the satisfaction of the landowners. Berkley was in charge, appointed by the king, and so most wanted to be loyal to him. plantation owners were well off, and members of the house of Burgess’s. Bacon was a rabble rouser, and even though he came from a wealthy family, was always championing the “little man” who in this case was small landowners and shopkeepers and the like, not the really “little people” like the workers and farmhands.
As long as Bacon was able to keep killing Indians, he was good, and the house of Burgess’s, and therefore the wealthy plantation owners, would continue to begrudgingly give him money for supplies, and encourage him to go off into the woods and kill Indians
