The word ‘antibiotic’ was named by Alexander Fleming. Waaaay back in 1495 Europeans used mercury to cure syphlis according to this history of antibiotics -http://www.life.umd.edu/classroom/bsci424/Chemotherapy/AntibioticsHistory.htm

In 1909 German chemist-physician Paul Ehrlich developed a chemical treatment for syphilis. It was named salvarsan (meaning “that which saves by arsenic”). Penicillin was also one of the first. Ernst Chain and his boss, Howard Florey, at Oxford University in england, made the first penicillin and with the help of the USA learned how to mass produce it to be used during World War II.http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/databank/entries/bmflem.html

The more ‘recently’ used antibiotics are:

1941- streptomycin – the first drug to have a proven effect on tuberculosis. Later other ones like terramycin and aureomycin came along. They were used to treat many different types of bacteria. (called broad-spectrum drugs)The greatest of the early broad-spectrum antibiotics was developed by Lloyd H Conover, who realised that terramycin and aureomycin had similar structures: they shared a core that he called tetracycline.

1950s- Erythromicin and vancomycin were developed by Eli Lilly for cases in which bacteria had proved resistant to other antibiotics.

We also have the other drugs listed in other messages.
