Well I know that Edgar’s schooling in Richmond encouraged his gift for language and he did very well in Latin and French. When he was about sixteen he wrote one of his earliest surviving poems; “Oh Tempora! Oh Mores!”. Edgar wrote enough poems to publish a book but Clarke persuaded John Allan not to publish it.

However, event wise I would say that it was the death of his parents when he was only 3. He always had a love and appreciation for language and since he spent so much time alone as an outcast in the home of his caregivers he had plenty of time to write about his thoughts including poetically.

He was very troubled in his life and a lot of that had to due to his marrying a 13 yo cousin. He became an outcast from his family and a lot of Baltimore society. That is one of the reasons he moved to the Bronx, NY.

He always had mental issues and died penniless.

His writings were not popular when he was alive.
