Of course, Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought awareness to society of the treatment of African Americans, and Abe Lincoln called the author, “The little lady who started the war.”

Another example of literature transforming social conditions would be Upton Sinclair’s book, The Jungle.

It launched a government investigation of the meatpacking plants of Chicago, and changed the food laws of America.

A third example is Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. That book was credited with starting the environmental movement.

In other words, a work of literature can bring the attention of social problems or conditions to the masses.

I don’t think that a piece of literature can transform social conditions, but I do believe that it can make society more aware of them. On good example, is Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. People were not aware of how much african mericans really suffered. Through this book they found out how hard their lives truly were. Even though it was a revelation to them, slavery still continued. Yeah you had abolitionists, but they themselves could not stop slavery as a whole.
