The reason you multiply it by 1.2 is the “1” is the 100% of the people that already live there. You add on the .2 because the country’s population increased by 20%.

It saves a step at the end when you would have had to add 68000 to 340,000.

Increase in 10 years was 20%

Let pop in 1990 = x = (1.2)(original pop)

340,000(1.2) = 408,000

To determine the percentage in decimal form divide the given by 100 (move decimal two spaces left)

Add 1 to the answer to represent the total original population of 340,000/340,000

340,000 + 68,000 = 408,000 people in 1990

That covers the 100% that existed in 1980 and teh extra 20% that existed in 1990

amount to 340,000 and you will have your figure.

Another way, ten percent is 34,000. Twenty percent is

68,000. So add 340,000 to 68,000 and you have the figure.
