Can you help me simplify this expression?

3+[5x(-4)+2^3] divided by 3

Oh yeah the 2^3 is an exponent in case you didn’t know!

I’ll go one step further. I’ll help you find the stuff you’ll really need to know in order to pass your class.

Look up “order of operations” in the index of your Math textbook, and follow those instructions.

Like your first answer said, when you’re first learning it, it’s confusing as all get out, so instead of just answering this one question for you and leaving you confused as all get out on your next one, you will be better off knowing were exactly in the book to find where it teaches you to do it.

Okay Remember “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”

P–Parenthesis

E–Exponents

M–Multiply

D–Divide

A–Add

S–Subtract

So first You do everything in the Parenthesis so forget about dividing by 3 and add 3 until later. That Leaves you with

[5x(-4)+2^3]

you wanna do the exponent first so that gives you

[5x(-4)+12]

Then you Multiply

[-20+12]

That Gives You -8, so you add the 3 to that which give you -5 and divide by three which gives you -5/3

i’m pretty sure thats right

{3 + [5x (-4) + 2^3]}/3

(3 – 20x + 8)/3

(11 – 20x)/3

but pAg makes a good point: “is the entire first part of your equation divided by 3 or only the second part. is x times or is it unknown?”

if x is times:

{3 + [5x(-4) + 2^3]}/3

(3 – 20 + 8)/3

-9/3

-3

(if the x is a times…because you did not specify)

3+(-20+(2^3)/3

i did the paranthese around the 2^3 to remember to find out the exponent but you don’t have to do it. or 3+(( -20 + 2^3)/3)

3+(-20 + 8)/3

(-12/3) +3

(4)+3

7?

i don’t know…

Okay, don’t fool around with the / 3 until later.

I don’t really know.. Is the 3 + … included in “/ 3”? I’m just going to assume it is.

[3 + [5x(-4) + 2^3]] / 3

Firstly, simplify.

[3 + (-20x + 8)]/3

Combine like terms.

(11 – 20x)/3

That’s as far as you can go.

3 + [5x (-4) + 2^3] divide by 3

[3-20x + 8] / 3

[11-20x] / 3

that is how far you can simplify
