can someone tell me what is wrong with this summary?

“Regarding the Pain of Other” by Susan Sontag states that photographs can inform impact and change people’s mind about events from the past and the present. The passage supports this idea by giving examples of photographs that depicted the pain and misfortune of people from several events. Some of them were the public health authorities in Canada that printed on every pack of cigarettes a photograph of a cancerous lung to inform people not to smoke and its effects. The second the photographs of two veterans from the first World War who had their faces disfigured because of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another example, the photographs about the abuse of the Jews received in the concentration camps in the time of the Nazi.

In these cases the purpose of photography is to illustrate and give references from the past and the present. Also to help the viewer to visualize in his mind how the story of really happened. All these photographs according to Sontag left chasm that could never be fill that stay in their memories of the people eternally. For these reason some people wanted those crimes to be remembered and for that they want to have museums or temples that have chorological illustrations of their suffering. Unfortunately those museums were built only for specific events such as the Holocaust Memorial in Washington D.C. and for the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Meanwhile other’s suffering weren’t remembered like the slavery of African American and a museum was not constructed to remember their struggled that they went through. This is why photography is used in these cases, to show the injustice, difference and events in which others are treated unequal or to show the effort and reality of others.

“Also to help the viewer to visualize in his mind how the story of really happened.” You can change it around to something like ” It also helps the viewers visualizes how the story really happened.” Try not to put Also at the beginning of the sentence.

“All these photographs according to Sontag left chasm that could never be fill that stay in their memories of the people eternally.” You are not making sense in this sentence: maybe you can say something along the lines of: “According to Sontag, all these photographs left chasms that could never be filled and stays as a memory in the peoples’ mind eternally.” Change your word around and you’ll be find…make sure you go over it and read it outloud so you know if there’s a word that doesn’t belong there or if you spelled something wrong. OKay?

This is comparing two very different kinds of events – the sudden, horrific events, like dropping to atomic bomb, or the Holocaust, or 9/11, to give a modern example. And there were many cameras available to record all of these events.

The slavery of African Americans, on the other hand, took place before photography was available, and slavery continued for a very long time. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t horrific – it was – but it wasn’t the sudden, dramatic event that the previously mentioned ones were.

Photography doesn’t show injustice. Photography shows scenes, people, places, incidents. Nor can photography show effort.

There is a problem with Sontag’s whole theory, however, in that there is no recognition of the fact that photographs can be edited, photographs can be selected, and photographs can be made to say anything you want.

Just for an example, let’s pick a happier occasion – a birthday party. Show a picture of the birthday girl blowing out candles on a cake, and everyone smiles. Then show a picture of a little girl whose balloon has burst, and she is in tears. If you showed one picture, it would seem a happy event. If you showed the other, it would seem a sad event. This is not to suggest that pictures of the Holocaust, Nagasaki or 9/11 were edited to show the horrendous events they portrayed, but just to point out that there are frequently more sides to a story than what a selected image shows and Sontag’s generalization doesn’t recognize that fact.

There were also acts of heroism in each of the events she mentions and acts of human kindness. But these are not often included in the portrayals of those terrible events.

Did your English or History teacher tell you it was no good and that is why you are asking? There are quite a few things wrong with it as far as how it flows, it doesn’t. It is boring and it looks like you just started writing down facts from a few books. You need to put a little of your own insight into it as well and watch your punctuation and grammar. You don’t need to state; “Another example,” just give examples and your opinion too. Also, “The second the photographs of two veterans from the first World War…..” makes no sense. Pay attention to what you wrote and that will help a little.

Okay, if its a summary, all you need to do is summarize the main point the author is trying to make, and you should be able to do this in a few sentences, maybe a paragraph. I don’t know what you are trying to summarize, but this seems too long. You don’t need examples in summaries either, just get to the point. Examples are only used to emphasize the main point. And a summary should always be in your own words.

Since this question popped up in the religious section , I suppose you want a religious answer . One of the ten commandments , ” Thou shalt not commit adultery ” . Churches make rules and laws by the hundreds , but the really big ones are the ten commandments . Many think that God is forgiving. Yeah , maybe . If we’re on this earth as a testing ground to determine who’s worthy of heaven , all of our transgressions will have to be laid out on the bench to be judged by the big guy on judgement day . If you’re religious at all , obey the commandments above everything else . Otherwise prepare for some free heat .

Photography didn’t exist until the mid-1800’s. In its early days, it was a complicated and expensive process. So, while photos were taken of Abraham Lincoln and other powerful people, few photos were taken of slaves.
