A bearing of a line simply means identifying a point of reference which lies along the line. So, you can visually locate and describe a bearing by its feature(s).

For example, when sailing, a bearing might be a building on the horizon which the pilot keeps the nose of the boat pointed. This is where the expression, “I need to find my bearings” comes from. It’s simply a reference point in relation to one or more reference points.
