I believe that this quote is saying you have to play in order to succeed. You have to play by the rules in order to make it. Dealing with people who aren’t going nowhere wont get you to where you want to go. You’ll be just like them-stuck. SO you have to play with the big shots in order to be like the big shots.

A father explains to his son that life is a game. However, you need to follow all the rules and laws in life. The son agrees.
However a third party believes that if you get on the bad side of life, into drugs, crime, etc.. then you could become homeless and there is no light at the end. You could become a bum and hopeless. So, there is no reason to follow rules because the game is over.
