Algebra help…. (please help, ive been doing this for like 3 hours)?

Consider the functions f(x) = 2x – 3

and

g(x) = x^2 + x – 5

and then they gave me this weird thing:

f(x+h) – f(x)

_________

h

and heres the actual question:

Evaluate the difference quotient for the function f and simplify your result.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!?!?!

so, you have the original equasion f(x). that just means that it is a variable. so, i have nno idea why they give you g(x). u sure it’s not h(x)?

substitution.

f(x+h)= 2(x+h)-3 – 2(x)-3./h

2x+2h – 3 – 2x – 2/h

2h – 6

i think.

hooo.. its been a while..

i’m not sure how you’re supposed to do this since they never provided what g is all about but, try solving for h by substituting your f(x) …

(2x+h)-(3+h) / h
