Is it right to give us homework?

Should we go without homework?

well if you think about it HW is optional, if we don’t do it, no one is going to come and arrest us lol. I guess if you do, or don’t do it its really based on how responsible you are but that’s just me.

If we didn’t have any Hw it would separate the kids who want to achieve and don’t want to do anything with their lives.

Let me explain, Hw is basically a review of what you have have done that day or week in school. If we didn’t have Hw students would have to find their own time to study and expand their knowledge. The ones who don’t either don’t care or aren’t motivated enough.

When I was at school {9 years ago}, we were only given about 30 minutes of homework. And at Primary School we didn’t have any ~ kids now get at least 1 hour. The reason here in the UK is that the system has changed, and children are given exams every couple of years from age 7 onwards. Because the Government insists on more English and Maths being taught {because they messed up the system so kids aren’t taught to read properly in the first place!}, teachers are having to give out far more homework to make up for the things they don’t have time to teach in lessons. But kids aren’t learning properly anymore anyway ~ they are being taught only what they need to know to pass the tests, so the schools will look good in the league tables. Education has gone rapidly downhill since I left school 🙁 Also, in some schools lessons only last 45 minutes rather than an hour. It takes 5-10 minutes at the start to get kids settled, and the same at the end to pack up and get them to their next lesson. So the actual teaching only lasts 25-30 minutes. So all that missed work has to be done at home.

My personal opinion is that 90% of the time in the classroom is spent on administration, paperwork and crowd control. Most of the learning takes place between the student and the book, at home. I believe that we should either change the curriculum to encompass more learning in school, or shorten the day and give more homework.

The reality of globalization is that if we don’t do something soon, we will HAVE to hire people from other nations to do everything but service work, because we are failing to keep up with even developing nations in terms of education. It is very depressing to think that a teacher in a developing country that doesn’t even have the basics and utilizes a 15 year old donated textbook to teach 40 kids does a better job than the American educational system.

Homework. You have a LOT of questions, now don’t you? Just answer one question. Would you review and practice the work you did during the day at school on your own? Be honest. Homework is absolutely necessary. Then at least you have a goal. Think about a sport you might do. If you didn’t practice playing tennis, volleyball or soccer, would you exceed at these? I know that it isn’t easy to be at school for hours and hours and then have to do an hour or two of homework. But think about what you want to do with your life. Would you like to bake buns for a living? This means getting up at 3:00 a.m. in the morning and most likely working until 1 p.m. at an hourly rate of perhaps $8.00. Do you think you can live the way you would like to on this wage?

Sorry, but school work is your job at the moment. And your future.

Homework is an extension of the lessons learned in class. Most children, once they get home, will forget what they learned because they tend to plop themselves directly in front of the tv. Some teachers so give too much homework. Homework should be something that is done with the parents (for younger children) to connect the parents to the class and to show that it is something that is important. As a second grade teacher, I don’t assign anything more for homework than what is necessary. Usually only a couple of things. For example, rereading with a family member something we read in class that I feel is important for them to know; or writing 3 times each the spelling words they got wrong on the pretest that day, or putting their spelling words in ABC order.

No, schools should not have a 30 minute time period to do work, because that defeats the purpose of having HOMEwork. And kids get plenty of time to do homework, at home. If you don’t have enough time to do homework at home, that means you are either procrastinating or your parents don’t give you the time, which, to me, sounds highly unlikely in most homes across the country.

I think American children don’t take school or homework seriously enough, and that is why several other countries, including Japan, China, England, Germay, etc., are way ahead of us in education. Those countries teach their children that education is a highly important aspect of the world and they don’t take it lightly. Those children are in school far longer during the day than we are, some countries or districts within those countries have school on Saturdays, and most schools in other countries give their children far more homework than our children get, and those children don’t whine and complain about it. Americans in general are too lazy for our own good.

It is totally unfair to give the same amount and type of homework to each student, which makes no sense at all. Some of us have after-school jobs, ex-curricular activities, or other critical engagements. It is unfair to be penalized when you don’t do the homework. Homework should be purely optional. If want to do it fine. If not, that’s fine too. I know kids who get A’s and spend minimal time on homework. I also know kids who get C’s an bust their butts.

That is why homework should be optional and tailored to each kid after taking into consideration their schedules.

Homework reinforces the work you learned that day, so yes homework should be given. I think an assignment should take no more than 20 – 30 minutes though, anything past that is excessive considering most ppl have 7 subjects.

Schools give out homework based on how the grade of the school is the lower it is the more they give I read a study that higher the grade students are not as overwhelmed as those in lower grade schools. I would know my school is a C and i get a ton of homework and the excuse tha teachers give is you have to write for the state exams (FCAT in my case) but man its horrible.
